Letter opener by Jules Moigniez (French, 1835-1894)
This captivating bronze letter opener features a recumbent Setter with its paw resting gently on a dog's collar, which forms the blade. Created by Jules Moigniez (French, 1835–1894) and signed 'J. Moigniez' on the collar, this piece dates to around 1880. Moigniez earned acclaim for his sculpting skills in 1862 with a medal from the London Great Exhibition.
His original patinas and gilding techniques are distinctly visible in his lifetime works, cast in a foundry established by his father. After his passing, the foundry, later managed by Auguste Gouge, continued producing his pieces into the early 20th century, with Susse Frères also creating posthumous editions.
